What is Red Light Therapy?

Hair loss is normal and part of the body’s natural renewal cycle. When old hairs fall out, new ones take their place. On average, most people will lose 50-100 hairs a day, often without noticing. However, some lose closer to 150-200 strands per day, which can become noticeable.

As part of our hair restoration plan here at AW Medspa, we combine three key components to help deliver results:

  1. PRP Hair Restoration
  2. Nutrafol Hair Supplements
  3. Red Light Therapy

While you may have heard about PRP Hair Restoration and Nutrafol, you may have even tried them both, did you know that red light therapy helps slow hair loss?

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy involves exposing your hair follicles and the surrounding skin to red light to help promote hair growth. Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) uses wavelengths between 650-655 nanometers of red light to help hair follicles stay in the growth stage for longer, boosting your hair growth. At the same time, LLLT encourages hairs in the resting stage to cycle back to the growth stage quicker.

To help encourage your hair growth, we here at AW Medspa use Capillus LLLT caps.

What is Capillus?

Capillus is a LLLT cap that you will wear every day for six minutes a day. That’s right, only six minutes a day helps boost your hair growth!

Capillus uses a 6 month cycle* as a general timeline of how your hair growth should look:

1-2 months: Shedding may temporarily increase as feeble hairs begin to make room for the new and stronger hairs to grow.

3-4 months: Shedding should begin to decrease as new hairs start to grow in.

5-6 months: Shedding should be a lot slower, and you should begin to see minor visible results.

6+ months: By this point, your shedding may have stopped and new hair follicles should be growing new hairs.

At this point, you will not want to stop using Capillus. To get the best results, you will want to continue using your cap and seeing more hair growth.

Why Choose Capillus?

Capillus is a better option for red light therapy, as they use LEDs instead of lasers. LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulation of Emitted Radiation. Lasers produce a very intense beam of light containing monochromatic wavelengths that only travel in one part, in the same phase, in the same direction. You’ll only receive the laser in one specific place, only receiving the benefits in one specific place.

LEDs on the other hand stand for light-emitting diode. This helps cause the red light therapy to spread across the scalp and penetrate deeper into the scalp with a higher concentration.

Is Red Light Therapy Effective?

Yes! Red light therapy promotes hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), as well as a alopecia areata (a separate type of alopecia that can cause patchy bald spots). Red light therapy can treat other types of hair loss, as well, as it helps create the right environment to promote a hair growth of 9-10 hairs per centimeter squared. That’s a noticeable difference!

Red Light Therapy Results:

It takes time for hair to grow. You will not notice immediate results with red light therapy, as it takes time for each hair follicle to restore its health and for new strands to grow in its place. Results can also vary depending on individual factors, such as stress, age, medications and more. The best results come from a combination of other products and treatments (like PRP Hair Restoration and Nutrafol).
