Dermaplaning- The what’s? The why’s? The How’s?
Every day, your skin is exposed to harsh conditions that can cause your skin to irritate. The more damage your skin receives, the duller your skin appears, causing your skin to look more aged. To get glowing skin, you will want to exfoliate. One way to exfoliate is to try Dermaplaning.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an exfoliation procedure that involves using a scalpel or dermatome to scrape off the top layer of your skin. By moving the scalpel or dermatome back and forth across the face, the esthetician is removing dirt, vellus hairs (peach fuzz), fine wrinkles, and uneven pockmarks on your skin. The procedure is very similar to shaving in the way that the sterile blade is angled at 45 degrees and slowly drags across your skin.
What Can I Expect From Dermaplaning?
If you are wanting your skin to appear younger, smoother, and brighter, Dermaplaning can help. Your fine lines and wrinkles will begin to fade by easing the hyperpigmentation and uneven tones of your skin. You will soon find your skin glowing brighter than before.
Most people will have little to no irritation or reactions to your skin, as Dermaplaning is safe for most people. You may feel a slight tingling sensation during your treatment. Most short-term side effects can include your skin turning red or slightly swollen from the scraping. You may experience some soreness to your skin, as well as a burning or tingling feeling up to 48-hours after your procedure, and you may see some whiteheads pop up on your skin within 48-hours of the treatment. In rare instances, you may end up with an infection, scarring, or a patchy skin pigmentation.
I Think I Want To Get A Dermaplane. What’s The Next Step?
Before you get a Dermaplane, you will want to receive a consultation to make sure you are a good qualifier. Dermaplaning is not recommended if you have acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, or a sunburn. If you are currently taking Isotretinoin, or any other strong acne medications, wait at least six months after you stop taking it. If your acne begins to flare up before your appointment, reschedule for a different day, as it could cause more damage to your skin.
If you wind up being a good qualifier for Dermaplaning, you will want to properly prepare your face for the treatment. Avoid direct sunlight or tanning for one week before you receive a Dermaplane, and avoid exfoliating your skin for at least three days before your treatment.
The procedure will take 30 minutes, and there is no downtime afterwards. If you wanted to receive a Dermaplane during your lunch break, you could fit one in. You may also combine this treatment with a facial or a chemical peel for even better results! After your treatment, you will want to use a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, as you need to be extra careful about sun exposure, and wear a lightweight moisturizer. Your skin will feel a little sensitive, but in the next few days, you will see better results.
If you enjoy your results from Dermaplaning, you will want to get one again in the next three to four weeks, as the dead skin will pile back up again after three weeks. The results are not permanent, and the treatment will not get rid of all of your acne scars or stop your skin from aging.
